Product Review and Ripoff Alert HP Deskjet 1512 and HP Combo-pack 61 Black 61 Tri-color INK

Hi!  Let me introduce myself.  I'm Denyce and I'll be reviewing a couple HP products I purchased myself.

My main review is of the Ink.
I purchased the HP Deskjet 1512 Printer at Walmart for around 60.00 when my HP Officejet Pro 8600 went out after only having it for under a year.  So I didn't want to spend a few hundreds.  I work from home and I print everyday, so I will always need a printer for work purposes.

After doing some research online, I chose this HP Deskjet 1512 Printer because a few reviewers had said that if you're going to be printing a lot, to buy the cheaper printer because the ink is cheapest to refill.  This was great since my experience with the previous printer, I had already known that you constantly will have to refill ink or purchase new cartridges and I wanted to get away from doing that so much.

I believe I made a mistake.  I purchased the Printer the week of the 20th.  Most printers come with some ink already inside just to start you off. At the same time I had purchased the an ink combo.  Which was $33.97 at Walmart.

On 10/28/2013 the ink was already gone!  So I went to OfficeMax and purchased another combo at 33.99.

On 11/2/013 the ink was gone again! I purchased another combo, this time at Walmart for 33.97.

So within 2-3 weeks, I have already spent 101.93 on ink, and refilled it 3x.  So basically I am looking at 33.97-33.99 every 4-5 days.  Which is totally ridiculous!

Upon inspecting the cartridges, I found that they do not come filled all the way up.  So this is a total rip off for consumers.  I thought HP was reputable.  I'm having 2nd and 3rd doubts.  Also for the previous printer, I was spending even more money which the ink is about 20.00 per color and you need the 3 colors to print, plus the black which is about another 25.00.  You save a few dollars by buying the complete combo packs but even then, still a rip off.  I begin refilling that one myself and when the printer went totally out, I would not be in warranty because of refilling it myself which is why I bought the 2nd HP.

Just wanted to give some insight on how much a scam this is.  I probably print less than 60 sheets a day.

The ink box has a website you can check to check for ink volume and page yield information.  http://www.hp.com/go/learnaboutsupplies  [Page yield is the number of pages a user can print with a given printer and cartridge, based on certain assumptions.]
Credit to the site link above.

You can click the link to get information if you have not already done so but I'm sure it is a bunch of mumbo jumbo to you especially if you are spending so much in ink, you don't want to read it.  I did call HP as well and of course they had a representative who barely communicated well and just gave me automated-like answers.  I am furious to tell you the truth.  I run a very small business and really I am not a pc or printer tech.  I just want something inexpensive & efficient enough to get small print jobs done.  I do not print as many papers a day.  In 4 days less that 250 sheets as in estimate.

I did notice when filling up my own ink with the previous printer it did last much longer than going and buying new ink but with this new printer, I have not researched how to refill and in about 4 more days, I will be spending another 33. something on ink which is very annoying.

Thanks for reading, comment and suggestions are greatly appreciated and I have also recorded a video you may take a look at.  I hope this will help someone else to not have to spend a super amount of money constantly on ink.

  1. So why in the world would you keep buying ink? why didn't you just return the printer after it ran out the second time? why even bother going to the officemax? You could have returned it within the allowed time.

    1. Hi. The reason is because I am not the type of person to buy something and take it back. #1, I had it in my possession for a bit before I had actually started to use it, #2, I thought it was just a problem with the ink and didn't know it was going to continue to happen, but as it continued to happen, I already had it and needed to use it, so just kept buying ink for it. After using an item you can't just bring it back to the store because you think it does not work properly. I needed more sheets than this thing actually spits out and so I just dealt with it until I called HP and they actually helped me. The store doesn't do anything, I hadn't bought an extra warranty or anything, so finally dealt with the manufacturing warranty and still have the same problems. The point in this post is to let people know who may think thy can get everyday use out of this item, not to purchase unless they are printing 1 sheet a day or every so often, otherwise it is not god buy for everyday or office use. I learned this my way, but trying to help others so they don't waste money purchasing this. Thanks for your comment and thanks for reading. :)

    2. Hi ... I just get in since I looked about the HP1512 performance. In order to help, you should show us a typical print so that we can figure out if we can help with another printer ... R. B . at gh_hrts@outlook.com 2014-06-28 18h40

    3. @ the comment placed on June 28 2014 at 3:45 am.
HP did replace the printer and I sent the old one in. They said it might have been a product problem, but the new one sort've does the same thing so I have since then gotten another one and will update my review shortly. HP is a good company after all, you just need to know which printers to buy and for what, thanks for your comment!

  2. I was listening and had sympathy until they said "60 sheets a day". So you got 180 sheets from cartridges. You don't say if it's text or pictures. If I got 180 sheets from a cartridge I'd be ecstatic, no matter what the brand. You need to buy a laser with that print volume. Consider the total cost-per-page when choosing a printing solution, every business does, and inkjet is the highest. Full disclosure: I work for HP's non-printer segment, but previously worked on every printing technology there is.

    1. Hi! Thanks for commenting :) I think this is a leisure type of printer, not for everyday use. I can't get anything done with this on a daily basis.

  3. You can change the print quality to fast Draft and make your ink go much further. You can't really tell the difference unless it is color. I am a teacher and use this ink a LOT. I have never had it run out so quickly. I use fast Draft as much as possible.

    1. I had tried that too, changing to fast draft and it still was running out too fast. This is just a printer not to be used on a daily, all day printing basis. I'm glad I learned this but it takes using to get to know. Thanks for your reply!

  4. Thanks for the review. I too am looking for a quick replacement after my Brother DL2270 went down, something about needing a drum which retails for about $72 a pop and the toner about $45. After reading your review, I think I will pass on the 1512. Part of the solution if you are printing lots of things is to have a workhorse black/white printer for the items that do not need color and to only use your color printer for things that require color. After I started using my workhorse b/w printer for the last couple of years, I've decided that color is indeed a luxury so I have gone without. The 1512 is available for $34 today, but if I am going to spend that much for ink, it won't be worth it at any price. So now I'm looking for a power cord for the hp 1520 I haven't used in years. Just got the ink for $38, and saw the cord at Amazon for about $7, so that will have to do...

  5. Thanx 4 that insight! I have a VERY old HP printer (Deskjet 940C) that just konked out, and I'm currently shopping. The 940C actually lasted for around 12+ years! The ink was sort of expensive (#15 Black & #78 Tri-Color) but both lasted really well! Like almost every other consumer product ; They just don't make 'em like they used to!
